Care and maintenance of the jewel

In this page you will find some tips for the jewel’s care and maintenance.

Jewels in gold

Gold in its natural state is yellow.

In order for white gold to appear white in color, gold must be alloyed with our white metals which turn the color into white tending to yellowish: for example white gold 750 (18k) is made of 750 parts of yellow gold and of 250 of other white metals.

To make the gold extra white it must be rhodium plated: that means that the jewel undergoes a galvanic bath which turns its color extra white.

With the passing of time, the effect of the galvanic bath will fade away revealing its original yellow color: in this case it will be enough to replate the jewel every 12-18 months, so that it can maintain its lustre and maintenance.

To clean gold jewelry you will only need:

  • a few drops of detergent
  • a bowl of hot water
  • a toothbrush with soft bristles

Cleaning gold is a very simple process: first pour a few drops of detergent into the bowl of hot water.

Mix gently and let it soak for about 15/20 minutes until the product takes effect and the water cools down. Then you can use an old toothbrush with very soft bristles to gently brush the jewel or the gold item. At the end of the process rinse with lukewarm water with a soft and clean soft which leaves no residue on the object.

As regards the white gold, we can carry out the same procedure with hot water and detergents, but we must go to a professional to replate it again.

Diamond jewellery care

It is advisable to create a solution made of lukewarm water and dish soap: the detergent must not be a moisturizing product, which could grease the gold and the gemstone.

Let it soak for about 20-40 minutes and then gently brush the gemstone with a toothbrush with soft bristles.

In the end rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cotton cloth or let it air dry.

Jewels with gemstones

The gemstones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds are particularly sensitive to temperature changes: that’s why it is really important to wash them with care and delicacy by using a toothbrush with soft bristles, especially rubies and emeralds.

Aquamarines, which are semi-precious gemstones, are really transparent and tend to get easily dirty because of external agents (e.g. soaps, sanitizer) creating an opaque effect. We suggest you to pay attention to the water’s temperature, which must be neither too cold nor too hot, because temperature fluctuations could break the gems.

Jewels with pearls

Pearls must be treated with great care, as once they’re damaged it is not possible to repair them. It is advisable to wear them:

  • after having put creams, lacquers and perfumes on, which would ruin their color;
  • separately from other jewels, as they could streak or damage them.

Warm water and mild soap are recommended for cleaning, while for drying can be done with a soft cotton cloth.

We also suggest cleaning them with a microfibre cloth after every use and store them just in their box, in which they can breathe.

Daily after wearing them you must take care to always clean them with a microfiber cloth and store them in their case where they can "breathe", and not in a plastic bag.

Preservation of the jewels

Always wear your jewels after the application of cosmetics, hair spray or perfumes: some gemstones are porous and easily absorb chemicals which could cause color loss.

Never take off a jewel by pulling the gems: the setting may expand and cause leakage or loss of the gemstone.

Do not put different jewels next or on top of each other, as the gems may scratch.

Don’t wear jewels while playing sports, while cleaning or any similar activity that may expose them to the danger of damage.

It is advisable not to wear jewels together because being in contact with each other, they may have friction stripes

Do not use random detergents to clean the jewels: first make sure that these products are actually suitable for the gemstone.

The best place in which you can store your jewels is a jewelry box with many softly covered sections; if you don’t have a similar box, make sure that every jewel has its own space so that they don’t scratch.
