How to Care for Your Jewelry

In this page you will find some tips for the jewel’s care and maintenance.

Gold Jewellery

Gold in its natural state is yellow.

In order for white gold to appear silver-like in color, it must be alloyed with other metals which turn the color into white tending to yellowish: for example, white gold 750 (18kt) is made of 750 parts of yellow pure gold and of 250 of other metals.

To make the gold extra white it must go through an additional process: the rhodium plating.

Therefore, the jewel undergoes a galvanic bath which turns its color extra white.

With the passing of time, the effect of the galvanic bath will fade away revealing its original yellowish color: in this case it will be enough to re-plate the jewelry every 12-18 months, so that it can maintain its luster and appearance.

To clean gold jewelry you will only need:

  • A few drops of detergent
  • A bowl of hot water
  • A toothbrush with soft bristles

Cleaning gold is a very simple process: first, pour a few drops of detergent into the bowl of hot water.

Mix gently and let it soak for about 15/20 minutes. Then, you can use an old toothbrush with very soft bristles to gently brush the jewel or the gold item. At the end of the process rinse with lukewarm water with a soft tissue which will leave no residue on the object.

The white gold jewelry undergoes the same cleaning process but, as previously mentioned, it will need to be re-plated in the future.

Diamond jewellery care

It is advisable to create a solution made of lukewarm water and dish soap.

Let it soak for about 20-40 minutes and then gently brush the gemstone with a toothbrush with soft bristles.

In the end rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cotton cloth or let it air dry.

Jewels with gemstones

The gemstones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds are particularly sensitive to temperature changes: that’s why it is really important to wash them with care by using a toothbrush with soft bristles, especially rubies and emeralds.

Aquamarines, which are semi-precious gemstones, are transparent and tend to get easily dirty due to external agents (e.g. soaps, sanitizer) creating an opaque effect. We suggest you to pay attention to the water’s temperature, which must be neither too cold nor too hot, because temperature fluctuations could break the gems.

Jewels with pearls

Pearls must be treated with great care, as once they’re damaged it is not possible to repair them. It is advisable to wear them:

  • After having put body or hands lotions and perfumes on, which could ruin their color.
  • Separately from other jewels, as they could streak or damage them.

Warm water and mild soap are recommended for cleaning, while you can use a soft cotton cloth to dry your pearl jewelry.

We also suggest cleaning them with a microfiber cloth after every use and store in their original box, avoiding plastic bags to preserve their natural shiny and smooth finish.

Preservation your jewellery

Here’s some tips for keeping your jewelry perfect throughout the years.

  • Always wear your jewels after the application of cosmetics, hair spray or perfumes: some gemstones are porous and can easily absorb chemicals which could cause color loss.
  • Never take off a jewel by pulling the gems: the setting may expand and cause the loss of the gemstone.
  • Do not put different jewels next or on top of each other, as the gems may scratch.
  • Don’t wear jewels while playing contact sports, while cleaning or while doing any similar activity that may expose them to damages.
  • It is advisable not to wear jewels together as contact between them may cause friction and result in scratches.
  • Do not use random detergents to clean the jewels: first make sure that these products are actually suitable for the gemstone.
  • The best place where to store your jewels is a jewelry box divided into softly covered sections. If you don’t have a similar box, make sure that every jewel has its own space so that they don’t scratch.
